  • Compositional Voids

I’ve learned to be careful with leaving empty compositional space in my pictures. My friend Jeff has a habit of adding robot doom wherever he finds space available :)

This for instance is a photograph my brother took:

I then felt the urge to breath life into it like so:

fixedit_movedIt_webThere was much giggling / maniacal laughter throughout this process.

  • Shooting Pretty Things (with my camera)

ShootingPrettyThings_webSplashLast year, I got the itch to get back into photography. I originally fell in love with it as a hobby in my early teens, back when using a camera involved long, bad tasting strips of ribbon. My weapon of choice then was the Canon AE-1

This beautiful contraption taught me a lot about patience and how to cope with failure :)

I’m now wielding a Sony a6000, and finding that taking pictures is a much needed creative outlet for me. I love producing art, and in the past that has mostly meant sitting in front of a computer to create pretty things from scratch, but with a camera, I get to go out, explore the world and hunt down the pretty things, and shoot them! (with my camera…)

I’ll start posting  my photos here on a regular basis, but you can also checkout my photography site: www.shootingprettythings.com to see as a whole, where they are also available for purchase :)

  • FREEBIRDS

Reel FX’s first full length feature animated movie! Happens to have been mine too :)

    FREEBIRDS_Movie_Poster

Had a blast working on it, and very proud of the way it turned out.

You can check it out here:

Also, it was on NETFLIX last time I checked :)

  • Canvas for the Cause

So, Reel FX has an annual Canvas For A Cause fund-raiser, and I was happy to be apart of it this year. I’m pretty happy with the way mine turned out:

It’s been quite some time since I’ve done a traditional painting, and it was my first time with acrylics, so I started by doing a quick digital sketch to figure out how I wanted to approach it.

  • Look out world

May I present to you Dr. Randal Direen Ph.D

picture of dude in a lab coat and underware

(I’m not sure the world is ready for this…)

oh, I should note that this was heavily influenced by Pete Oswald’s work on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, which happens to be Randy’s favorite movie (I’ve never seen someone identify with a character so much before :)

  • I drew me some aminals

  • Softball

This bambino is about to BAMBEAN it! … that or egregiously miss, spiraling to the ground — there might be a reason he only plays on the weekends at a kids field ;)

  • Quick Watercolors

Oh watercolors, how you challenge me so.  These were done in a small 3×5 watercolor sketch book. The first two were done from vacation pictures; the later two were done on the spot.

(though doing a water color under water sounds like an interesting challenge :)

  • Been holding out on you

Funny how getting a new job and moving to a new state can keep a guy from his blogging duties ;P

Anyway, here are some drawin’s from the drawing class I’m taking at work:

    (all were 5 min. poses)

  • Spelunking

Went spelunking in Belize last year, and it left a lasting impression :)
